Dark Chocolate Pound Cake With Chocolate Glaze

2 1/4 cups cake flour (not self-rising)
3/4 cup unsweetened
Dutch-process cocoa powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup sour cream (8 1/2 ounces)
2 1/4 sticks (1 cup plus 2 tablespoons) unsalted butter, softened
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1 1/2 cups packed dark brown sugar
1 tablespoon chocolate extract* (optional)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
6 large eggs
3 ounces fine-quality bittersweet chocolate (not unsweetened)
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
Accompaniments:
Brown Sugar sour cream
Strawberries
Do not preheat oven. Butter and flour a 12-cup bundt pan, knocking out any excess flour. Into a small bowl sift together flour, unsweetened cocoa powder, and salt.

In another small bowl stir together baking soda and sour cream. In a large bowl with an electric mixer (preferably a standing electric mixer) beat together butter and sugars until light and fluffy, about 10 minutes. Beat in extracts and add eggs 1 at a time, beating well after each addition. With mixer at low speed, add flour mixture and sour cream mixture alternately in batches, beating until just combined. Pour batter into bundt pan and put in middle of cold oven. Set oven to 350°F and bake cake 1 hour and 25 minutes, or until a tester comes out clean. Cool cake in pan on a rack 15 minutes and turn out onto rack to cool completely.

Pound cake keeps, wrapped in plastic wrap, at room temperature 1 week. Alternatively, pound cake may be frozen, wrapped well in plastic wrap and foil, 3 months.

Chop bittersweet chocolate and in a double boiler or a metal bowl set over a saucepan of barely simmering water melt chocolate with butter, stirring until smooth. Transfer glaze to a pastry bag fitted with a #3 plain tip (slightly smaller than 1/8 inch). (Alternatively, transfer glaze to a small heavy-duty sealable plastic bag and press out excess air. Snip off 1 corner, making a small hole.) Pipe glaze back and forth over top of cake, letting it drip down sides. Let glaze set 30 minutes
at room temperature.

Serve cake with dollops of sour cream and strawberries.

Why are we here?

why are we here?

is there a meaning to life? or are we just here as a result of many coincidences?

A member of the Yahoo! Answers community asked this question today. Below is the “Answer” I gave. Enjoy.

I wonder how many times, “we” have asked this question.

The answer is elusive, but I would think, that the answer also changes based on the perspective of the person asking or answering the question.

In the book, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, the “Answer” to life is 42, but the question was unknown.

Some would argue that we are here to serve God.

Are we here as a great experiment of such immense proportions that we could not fathom it’s existence. Could it be God? Could God just be the scientist?

What if you woke up one day, and your entire life was a dream, and you realized you were just a small life form in a pond in some place we could not begin to imagine.

In my humble opinion, we are here in a great search for happiness. Even if we are searching for some unseen being’s happiness. Sometimes it’s elusive and quite hard for us to grab on to. Other times, happiness surrounds a soul it’s entire life.

These days, happiness is fleeting, and we can only hope that the World takes a turn for the better soon, or soon, there will be no one left to answer this great question, and no one left to ask it.

Fight Club Extreme

I was listening to two of my favorite talk radio shows the Michael Graham Show on 96.9 FM out of Boston the other day on the way to work and also on my way home listening to the Laura Ingham Show on the same station. While listening to them, I had a thought that the radical islamic movement seems a bit like the movie Fight Club.

These wack jobs, don’t talk about all the bad things they do, just talk about how oppressed they are. They beg you not to talk about their mantra to destroy Israel or anyone else that isn’t as crazy as they are. The same people that cry wolf when one someone shoots a sleeping terrorist, nce in the streets when one of our soldiers fighting this scum is killed or beheaded. They weasle their way into governments. They send their mental midgets to other cities to blow up women and children on their way to work and school.

Maybe our media outlets in the United States, should stop giving these wackos airtime, that’s why they are doing it, to bring attention to themselves like a 10,000 pound toddler throwing a temper tantrum. Report the good things that are happening in the world as well. I for one am tired of watching the news, and I used to be a fan of CNN Headline News, but even it only shows the grim, the horrific, and none of the good in the fight on terrorism.

Maybe when we finally find Osama, he will have the Fight Club novel with him and say that’s where I got it all. Maybe at the end of this wacko story, it will just be some guy that was beating himself up all the time, but Osama seems a bit more insane to be that character from the movie though. Fight Club Extreme is a bit more fitting.

***4th Of July 2006***

Woohoo! It’s the 4th of July, we are off to see fireworks in Bellingham this year, as the Natick Mall display is out for at least another year or so. I preluded to this here. With all the rain we have had this year, today was actually quite warm and dry, til late afternoon when it rained for a bit.

Edit - The fireworks were great in Bellingham! Although, the driving experience leaving the high school where they were held was absolutely atrocious. I would have expected the same level of police to direct and merge traffic smoothly as they had in Natick and Framingham, however, to my dismay I saw a number of them standing near their cars shooting the shit with each other. Oh well, it was a great display of fireworks, however I will get there late next time so that I can get the best parking to exit the area.

More on rain and moisture

As you may have read in a previous post of mine, it’s been raining here for going on what seems like forever! We inhabit the basement of our home with a bedroom and a big family room. While we don’t have free flowing water, we do have a rather highish level of humidity. The only room where it becomes quite high is the bedroom, this may be because of our not so finished rain gutter system that seeminly dumps a lot of the water near the wall of the bedroom, I will finish that this weekend. I’ve purchased a dehumidifier to help curb the dampness intrusion into our living space, but I am sure it sucks more than it’s fair share of power, which to be honest I don’t like!

Rain, rain, go away, come back again some other day!

The RAIN!!!

I have lived in Massachusetts for about 4 years now. In those years, sure it’s rained, and at times rained a lot, but this year, it has seemingly rained 2-3 days every week! For 8 days in late May we actually had no sunshine at all, just rain, buckets and buckets full of it. I won’t go and say that global warming is causing us to get more rain, but something is causing it, el nino? el nina? el bigraino? Something!

I just want it to slow down, I like rain, but hey this is ridiculous!

The Divinci what???

I’ve heard all the hype and all the crap coming from a book and a movie by the name of “The Divinci Code” which to me, by reading the cover that its FICTION, as in NOT BASED ON FACT! I am not sure what is so hard to figure out that it means, that it’s not a factual account of anything. I am now seeing all these signs, saying to not believe the Divinci Code movie and whatnot. I won’t because it is FICTION! Sorry that’s just my rant on this stupid issue about a movie that I’ve heard isn’t actually that good. I’m looking forward to watching Cars, cuz I like them and I love animation!

The thing that sent me over the edge was an advertisement on another blog about a product called “The Divinci Hoax”. Ok, so it’s a hoax because it’s clearly fiction, or is the hoax that it’s fiction but really an accurate portrayal? Oh Boy!

Better car, better story..

In a recent post, I talked about an old Volvo, and what I wasn’t going to do in the future. On the military installation where my wife works, many of the people there have been friends for many years. She noticed someone there advertising a 1998 Honda Odessy for sale for roughly $5000. She asked around her office and it seems the guy is friends with a couple in her office and they have known each other for going on 15 years. They vouch for him and say he’s a good guy. We met him yesterday to look at the car, well it’s a van sort of. The car was great, it ran great, it looked great, and he is selling it to us for only $4495.

He is getting rid of it simply because he won another car and already has 3 others, so a 5th one to insure would be too much he said. I will gladly take it off his hands. I really like the car, I will post a picture of it as soon as I am able! WOOHOO! Now to get rid of that piece of crap Volvo that we have. Donate it, or sell it to a junkyard? I wish I could get paid to watch someone smash it into a thousand pieces!

Edit - Sadly the man that sold us the car, died around Christmas of 2006, while at work.  My condolences to his wife and family.
